15 October 2019. CGIAR Collaborative Platform for Gender Research is pleased to mark the International Day of Rural Women – by sharing recent and compelling gender research from across CGIAR. A video by the CGIAR System Management Office offers us a welcoming glimpse of the rationale behind and diversity of system-wide gender research.

This year’s theme is: 'Rural Women and Girls Building Climate Resilience' so we begin with a video about gender-responsive rural climate services in Vietnam and a related literature review. We then keep moving around the globe delving into research that covers among others:

  • A video featuring a rural woman in Ghana and the challenges and opportunities that she faces in a context of limited land and tree access across international borders;

  • The theme-focused newsletter of the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA);
  • A blog featuring views about the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) and an invitation to a Twitter chat on the topic: “How can measuring women’s empowerment in agriculture support rural women worldwide?“;
  • An introduction to a book chapter on “Gender equality: women’s empowerment for rural revitalization“;
  • A video charting the experience of rural women in the maize seed business in East and Southern Africa;

  • The first gender-focused newsletter of the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes and Dryland
    International Day of Rural Women
    Cereals (GLDC):
This is the very first issue of the newsletter by the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes and Dryland Cereals (GLDC). This first issue is dedicated to International Day of Rural Women. GLDC gender coordinator Esther Njuguna-Mungai mentions:

"As we celebrate the international day of Rural Women in 2019, the Gender team is excited to launch an inaugural newsletter based on ‘Gender Research in the CRP-GLDC’. We create this space to share stories of process, impacts and outcomes in the research work that is implemented by Gender Researchers in the CGIAR Centre’s and partners that are members of the consortium implementing 4 flagship projects of the CRP-GLDC."
  • A paper on "Women, irrigation and social norms in Egypt"; Another paper on the "Dynamics of joint decision-making in rural areas";
  • And, finally, links to other CGIAR pieces of work relevant for International Day of Rural Women (and beyond).
