About Richard

Dr. Richard Kyalo is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Data Science at International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), where he focuses on developing advanced computational frameworks for climate-resilient dryland agro-ecosystems and livestock systems. He holds a PhD in Geospatial Analytics and Ecological Modelling from the University of Bonn, Germany, and graduate training in applied statistics and computational mathematics from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya.

Dr. Kyalo has over a decade of experience in data science, scientific computing, and geospatial modelling, with a strong focus on climate-resilient agro-ecosystems and livestock systems. His work centers on the integration of Earth observation, climate, and biophysical data into scalable, high-performance analytical pipelines, combined with the application of machine learning and advanced statistical modelling to quantify system dynamics, uncertainty, and risk in agricultural and environmental systems. He has contributed to research, development, and implementation programs across Africa, including roles with International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), USAID-funded resilience initiatives, Living Goods, and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics.

His research contributions include the development of spatially explicit risk models, early warning systems, and hybrid modelling frameworks that integrate mechanistic and data-driven approaches. He has a strong track record in translating complex analytical outputs into reproducible, decision-support tools, including interactive dashboards and AI-enabled platforms for real-world applications.

His expertise in strengthening capacity in computational science, and the development of machine learning, geospatial analytics, and reproducible scientific workflows, combined with his interdisciplinary approach, brings strong technical and analytical capacity to the ICARDA team in advancing data-driven, evidence-based solutions for sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
