Dr. Girma T. Kassie holds a Ph.D. in World Food Economics from Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, Germany, a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Econometrics from Lancaster University, UK, and MSc and BSc degrees in Agricultural Economics from Haramaya University, Ethiopia.
As a Principal Agricultural Market Economist, Dr. Kassie brings over 25 years of applied economics research experience across Africa, including Angola, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Tunisia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. His work focuses on agricultural marketing, value chain analysis, food security, climate change, impact assessment, and preference analysis (stated and revealed choice methods). His research aims to identify innovative strategies and policy interventions that enhance smallholder well-being and promote sustainable agricultural development. With 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Kassie is an Adjunct Professor of Agricultural Economics at Debre Markos University, Ethiopia. He has lectured different courses at several universities, including advanced microeconomics, marketing and pricing analysis, econometrics, and choice modelling. He actively advises and supervises numerous MSc and PhD students.
Dr. Kassie has held prominent leadership roles, serving as Associate Editor of Agricultural Economics for seven years and President of the Ethiopian Agricultural Economics Society for one term. He founded and led the Socioeconomics and Research Extension Program at ARARI in Ethiopia, and for CIMMYT, he has served as an objective leader for the "Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa" project. He has also represented ICARDA in various CGIAR wide Initiatives and Science Programs.
